Smart Harvesting: AI and Robotics in Agriculture

The agricultural sector faces growing challenges in harvesting operations due to rising labor costs, labor shortages, and the need for greater efficiency and sustainability. Traditional harvesting methods are labor-intensive and limit scalability, especially in crops like strawberries that require precision and care.
Our client Italrobot is a company specialized in the development of advanced robotic systems, that identified the Agritech sector as a strategic area for growth and innovation.

Key Issue

Action Plan

The project focused on creating an autonomous robotic system equipped with advanced machine vision, precision handling capabilities, and AI-driven decision-making algorithms. The system was engineered to perform delicate harvesting tasks efficiently, reducing the need for manual labor while improving accuracy and resource optimization. Our consulting firm supported the initiative by:
- Leading a multidisciplinary R&D project in collaboration with Italrobot, CREA (Agricultural Economics Research Center), and Cosoni Strawberry Farm to design and develop an innovative harvesting solution based on robotics and artificial intelligence.
- Securing European funding to finance research and development activities.
- Driving a marketing and communication plan.

The project successfully led to the development of a functional robotic prototype, which was showcased in a series of demonstration events, generating significant interest from industry stakeholders.
The project demonstrated how AI-powered robotics can:
- Increase harvesting productivity while maintaining product quality;
- Reduce dependence on manual labor, mitigating workforce shortages;
- Optimize resource use and promote sustainable agricultural practices;
- Set a new benchmark for precision and efficiency in modern agriculture.
